Permits are set town by town
In the Massachusetts towns we checked, permits come from the town, sometimes through the fire department.
In Massachusetts, some towns require a fire department dumpster permit even when the container is on private property (Falmouth does), so ask about the fire department as well as street placement.
Sizes and what can go in
Massachusetts rentals come in 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 yard sizes. See the dumpster sizes page for what each size is usually used for.
Paint, batteries, fuel oil, diesel, pressurized tanks and other hazardous items cannot go in. Mattresses, box springs, tires, rims, appliances, Freon items and large electronics can go in at an extra cost. Yard waste and dirt cannot be mixed with household or construction debris, so ask about a separate container for those.
Winter street placement
If the container may sit in the street during winter, ask the city or town about snow parking bans and plowing before you plan a street placement.
